Welcome to this week's You Are Destined For Greatness coming to you this afternoon from here in our hay yard. And to talk about a subject of a little one that's been a little confusing for me, and that is humility, okay?
Humility just sounds weak. Like, roll over. Like, you smacked me here, now smack me here, right? Like, I'm gonna cave in on my values and let you drive over me and anything you say goes, and I'm not important, including my values.
I've had some confusion and I think a lot of people I hear are not really clear on the principle of humility and it doesn't mean any of those things that I said.
To do this I'm going to look at the opposite and the opposite of humility is pride and arrogance. A lot of times people say well overconfidence and they confuse that with arrogance. Really there is no such thing as over, too much confidence. It can't be had. Me feeling good about me, there's not too much of that, period. You feeling good about you, same deal.
But what we do is we get confused with overconfidence, with arrogance, and arrogance means that I think that I'm better than you in some way, okay? That's arrogance. That is the opposite of humility.
Why are people arrogant? Why would I think that I'm better than you? I'll use the quick story that I had before about the veterinarian here that was an acquaintance of mine that was captured on video kicking the horse in the head.
He had all the hate, comments and the condemnation and the attacking online and he ended up committing suicide and of course he's responsible for his actions, but we're responsible for the influence that we provide to the world and people that participated in that certainly had an influence on, influenced his outcome right not ultimately responsible don't hear me saying that and also do not hear me justifying or agreeing with or condoning any you know kicking a horse in the head or any of that.
I'm just here to talk about why would we continue to attack him.
The interesting thing is, is after they found his body, after they found his body was missing, found his body in the lake about a week later. After they found his body, the hate continued to come in, the condemnation. I've never done that. He got what he deserved, karma, good riddance, and so on and so on and so on with all the hate.
Why? Why is it not enough for us to look at people's actions and say, “Hey, I don't like what you did. I don't agree with it. We're going to prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law. And we're going to do everything we can to avoid that action in the future and I'm going to separate that from you as an individual.”
Why is that not enough? Why do I need to be hateful and attacking? Why?
This is the question. It's important. Here's the answer. It's a weakness. Hear me. This condemnation and attacking and unkindness and arrogance is a weakness.
It comes from an internal lack of either something I don't like about me that I'm projecting, okay? And then I attack somebody for that. It's coming from a lack of self-worth or self-confidence where I feel superior or my rightness over somebody else helps me, gives me this false sense of feeling better about me because of a lack that I have inside of me.
It also comes from being accepted into a group. So if I see a lot of people attacking, I can kind of join the mob. I feel accepted because I'm not confident in my own position, in my own opinion.
I'm here to tell you, there's no other reason to attack and judge human beings that way other than a weakness. Period. Okay?
The opposite is what is called humility. Humility is the inner strength. Humility is the inner strength to be able to see ourselves as imperfect human beings and to fully accept that about ourselves which allows us the strength, the strength to look at other imperfect human beings that do things wrong, that do things that they're ashamed of, just like we have, just like our kids will, to look at them in the world and judge their actions and not their beings. Okay?
This exhibition of strength by practicing humility is what makes the world a better place. This is what elevates us all. This is what allows for positive change.
None of the other, the other is just a destructive cycle that continues to make things worse.
You want to be a part of the problem? Understand and practice humility. It all begins with you right here and now.
Hey, thank you for being with me and remember, You Are Destined For Greatness.
